Our History

New homes are being built every day across North America.  Every new and renovated home is a business opportunity to those in the construction field.  There are also an unlimited variety of buildings being erected every day: condos, hotels, offices, stores, hospitals and restaurants are a few examples.  All these buildings (whether new or being renovated) require finishing carpentry work - the target industry of THE COPER.  The professional, the handy man and the do-it-yourself specialist can all use this product to improve the speed and quality of their work.

One the most daunting jobs of a finishing carpenter is installing the molding in a new home.  While windows and doors are easily encased using 45-degree corners, the same cannot be said for baseboards and other interior angle moldings in the home.  Professionals do not use 45-degree angles here; rather, they cut one board straight to the corner and then cope (by hand) the next board to square up the corner.  This technique provides the carpenter with a perfect and near invisible corner every time.

From years of experience, we know that the coping method is the best method of completing interior angles on any type of baseboard.  The results are perfect even when a corner is not perfectly square.  The 45-degree interior corner is usually very visible and often very ugly.  There is, however, one big problem with the coping method - TIME!

For this reason Rob Veldman came up with the idea of using a router and a template to cope baseboard.  His original idea has led to the creation and development of THE COPER to provide a professional solution to a common problem.

To hand cope every interior molding in a new home or even a small project is delicate and precise work.  Each cut requires tracing the profile, coping the baseboard and filing away clearance to make a perfect fit.  THE COPER combines all of these steps into one motion using a pattern mold and a router.  The result is a perfect cut every time with plenty of clearance for a perfect fit!  THE COPER makes a cleaner and more accurate cut than any hand cut.

There are many opportunities and open doors just around the corner for THE COPER.  The largest door opens to the sales opportunities available in magazines, catalogs, shows, the internet, hardware stores, lumber yards and tool suppliers.  There is also an entire specialty field waiting to be developed which produces quality tools, jigs and  devices which improve the finishing carpentry process.

The Coper is a dynamic incorporated company that is owned and operated in Southern Alberta.  With a number of new product ideas lined up, finishing carpenters will soon be reaping the benefits of a range of devices used to improve both the quality and speed of their finishing work.  The first tool destined for production: THE COPER.
